Less Traveled

At Crescent Bay again, Guthrie bounds up the path I would like to take, but I wait for his return while I pause to enjoy the wildflowers at the edge of his chosen path. It helped me see that a tough path might just slow me down, make me more attentive and aware of the beauty around me, such is this phlox I’ve never seen before. I believe it is Phlox longifolia, long-leaf phlox that grows in the shrub-steppe. Its leaves are narrow and its stem is taller; the flowers are clustered. It’s beautiful.

And so, a haiku.

Less Traveled

a path less traveled,
though rough, inures vigilance
freed to see beauty.
