Beauty Bush

A Little Note

The Photo:

Beauty Bush: Kolkwitzia amabilis, an ornamental plant from China, at the edge of Cole Park

The Thought:

The Beauty Bush shrub was planted  in the 1930s by the Civil Conservation Corps during the construction of Grand Coulee DamCoulee Dam was “engineer’s town,” and owned/managed by the Bureau of Reclamation. The CCCs developed most of the landscape on the west side of Coulee Dam, where I live.

Coulee Dam was a government-owned town until 1957-1959, when the process of selling the town back to the public was complete. [Wikipedia, Coulee Dam and my post Japanese Barberry]

It’s awesome to think of the planning that occurred to develop landscaping that would bloom slowly at different times so that something is always in bloom, starting in early spring. Here it is May, and this lovely bush just now brings a delightful cascade of blossoms after many others have lost their blooms.

I’m worried and disappointed that in the United States we’ve not had the forethought to realize that the people who are gaining power are those that inhibit freedom for anyone not white and rich and male. I don’t think people realize the horror that could occur if these people are totally in charge. We won’t recognize our country. And we certainly will not be great again.

The greatness of our country is our diversity and our humanity. We are not perfect— but what will we do when we’ve lost our freedoms— I mean freedom for all of us, not just a few who think they are better than everyone else?

Beauty Bush

a shrub from China

planted in our local park

years ago still blooms;

a thought to regard:

look for beauty in others

so our spirits bloom.
