Pinecone:

Not a large Ponderosa,

The yellow pine

With its curved prickly spines;

Nor a Douglas fir

With its mouse tails 

beneath the cone’s scales;

But a small blossom

of scale pairs,

opened:

Thuja orientalis—

an autumn flower.
