Turn Around

Turn Around

Daily walk around the park;

Same route— same views;

I step up to round the pool— and

blackbird swoops into my path; I stop

thinking it’s a warning dropped;

But, ignoring such a cue,

on I walk, and as I round the backside edge

six pairs of ears perk up and stare—

me, a human, stands there

where mule deer nap

now frozen in their cozy space

do they stay or do they race?

I snap a pic as they decide

‘tween “danger” and “let it ride;”

I step back and step away

allowing them their place of rest

and I now know the blackbird’s quest

to warn the deer and turn me away

on this, my walk, today.
