Look This Way

Look This Way

I can’t quite wrap my head around

the hatred that person spreads

the inhuman orders carried out in his name

the hurt he hurls without a tinge of regret

the harm they flesh out under our flag

and brag

of the wounds

in numbers of humans hurt, held, harmed

gleefully hoping to also capture

me and you and anyone with empathy.

So I will wrap my thoughts around

the sunset on sunflowers shining, singing

“keep looking this way; we will find a way” 

and pray

for the day we awaken again

as land of the free

home of the brave.
