The day is over
and over our heads
is Chief Joseph
guiding over us
reminding us
the words he said,
"I will fight no more forever."
And in the school
that is what they do
a quiet refusal
a passive resistance
a glint in the eye
that says "Make me;"
a stare,
too long,
that says, "I dare you."
And yet
they will fight no more forever
And you
can't
fight
that.
