Happiness

Like a ray of sunshine peeking
through storm clouds, it
caught my eye;

That yellow burst of spring, a
sunflower standing tall within
its green guards spreading
wide;

Daringly, it popped up
through the fire-scorched
land, proudly holding its head
high;

Behind the memory of flame
blackened sage– destroying
hope– the yellow petals of
perpetuity persisted, and I
smiled.
