Slice of Life Curves

Life's curves turn us,
Sometimes swirl us
Sending us off plans-
Survival occurs
As we seek serenity
In new paths
Opening, unfolding
Within life's chaos-
Our curves we choose.

NaPoWriMo npm16 Life

Life

Plan a path,
A path forward,
Forward to dreams,
Dreams life interrupts,
Interrupts but deters not,
Not to end dreams,
Dreams plan a new path.

NaPoWriMo npm16 Surprise

Surprise

Strolling through the park I love
And have enjoyed so often
The lovely green of trees and shrubs
Cooling the rays of the searing sun,
I heard a meadowlark sing its tune
And looked up for its yellow hue
Instead I found an unnoticed view
A surprise of pleasant beauty:
The bountiful blooms of a lilac tree.

NaPoWriMo npm16 Catnap

Cats curl up
For hours each day
In weeds and plants
On laundry folded
(Your favorite pants)

Cats curl up
Ears alert; half asleep
Eyes half-closed; a power nap
Their favorite place to purr and gush
Is safely curled in master's lap

NaPoWriMo npm16 Sky

Sky

Clear blue sky
Frames majestic firs
Standing alert
Saluting the red, white, and blue
Snapping all to attention
Honoring our natural
Clear blue sky.

Blue Light

Morning's early rush,
a delight with blue bouquet
a student's fresh pick.

NaPoWriMo npm16 Enchanted Trees

Enchanted Trees

Stop to imagine
Crooked branches as cottages
Twisted trunks as highways
Criss-crossing roots as paths
Fallen petals as magic
Tossed by fairies
Frolicking from their cottage in the leaves
Traversing bark highways
Crossing in around and under roots
Laughing and dancing with their enchanted trees.

Wildfire

Seething scorching flames
raced over forests for miles
blackening all pines.

Spring rains nourish soils
wildflowers blossom amid
burned relics of fire.

Night Storm

Sleep soundly at night
while the unknown storm rages;
morning finds mayhem;
pink cherry blossoms mangled:
reveals night’s chaos on lawn.

NaPoWriMo npm16 Tulips in the Lavender

Tulips in the Lavender

Periphery

Check the list; hurry.
Groceries from the car; next.
Doctor appointment; go.
Rush out the door; wait.
What’s that orange? stop.
Stop. Turn back.
Orange and yellow serrated petals
in blades and dried buds of fall’s lavender.
A hidden precursor to summer; look.
Life’s beauty in the periphery; enjoyed.

Small Ones
A Reflective Haiku
A Poem in Columns and Rows

Small Ones 1

Small ones imagine
worlds in chalk with lines and shapes,
personally signed,

in playful places
proudly sharing their delight,
we breathe in, and smile.

Or

Small Ones 2

Small ones imagine
in playful places
worlds in chalk with lines and shapes,
proudly sharing their delight,
personally signed,
we breathe in, and smile.

NaPoWriMo #npm16 The Wind 18.2016

The Wind

Wind
Flows like a wave:
Sometimes softly cooling evenings,
a respite from the heat;

Flows like a wave:
Sometimes angrily breaking branches,
a destruction in the storm;

Flows like a wave:
Sometimes playfully whirling leaves,
a change of the seasons.

NaPoWriMo Blossoming

Blossoming

Outside the door, buds blossom, full of dew
Nourishing drops absorbed to new
stronger growth: a living pillar to view;

Inside the door kids blossom, full of show
Nourishing minds absorbed to grow

creative thinkers: a future ready to know.

NaPoWriMo End of Day

End of Day

Voices flood classrooms;
rain patters on the steel roof;
words flow like rivers;
city lights soak up the mist
and coffee clears up the mind.

glows like the sun
throughout the spring days
blanketing the hillsides
spreading out and soaking in sun rays.

Cherry Blossoms

Thank you Earth
for cherry trees
bursts of pink blossoms
on branches full
hiding robin’s
nest,
but not her
too early chirp,

my alarm clock.

Outside My Window

Gray
block of concrete
dam river detour
peeks between a beaten

Green
steel siding city shop
rusted and wrinkled
across from

Tan
welcoming home
engulfed in gardens
in front of

Gray
pavement; a street
rebounding the bounce of a basketball
and cheers of children

Stories

Brick by brick
Mortar seals
Lintel on post
Embellished arch
Stone sill
Built to last
Weathered window to the world

People to People
Memory seals
Living to past
Intermeshed acumen
Solace and strife
Born to learn
Imagining answers to the universe

One Different Daffodil #napowrimo

One Different Daffodil

One
Different
Daffodil

Opened
On its own
Yellow and bright

Facing away
Away from the sun
A ways from others

Facing towards
Another fair clump
Of pale daffodils

Gathered together
Gathered towards the sun
Gathered towards the one

The one different daffodil
A choir and its director
Singing of spring.
