Sweet Shadows

Mostly gone
     Mocha
in white
porcelain
     cup
inscribed outside with granddaughter’s
painting scribbles of red, yellow, green, blue, and purple --
a scene of a meadow on a sunny day, blossoming in flowers
     annotated with “I Heart Grandma”
inscribed inside with mocha powder
clinging to the white sides
leaving shadows of
     its sweet taste
like the shadow
    of memories
of Granddaughter’s
    sweet laughter.

Writing Poetry as Workshop
As Gifts from the Heart
Sheri Edwards

Begin––
Broad is narrowed
Moments and parts
Events and things
At first obvious
Unmysterious

Describe
in specifics
exactly
snapped
in
place.

Ground the draft
in the present
place and
thing.

Live with the object
Live as the event
Until the magical moment
the specific of meaning
evolves:

Mostly gone
Mocha
in white
porcelain
cup
inscribed outside with granddaughter’s
painting scribbles of red, yellow, green, blue, and purple --
a scene of a meadow on a sunny day, blossoming in flowers
annotated with “I Heart Grandma”
inscribed inside with mocha powder
clinging to the white sides
leaving shadows of
its sweet taste
like the shadow
of memories
of Granddaughter’s
sweet laughter.
Continue––
Workshop from the Heart
Give with care
Honoring the gift
of
Open hearts.

In poetry workshop:
Poetry is given
Readers will offer
experience:
Author’s Listen

Listen as users
Connect to the poem’s
words and their meaning,
a user’s experience
revealed

Listen as users
Compliment the lines
they love that live within
or live awakened in
the user’s experience
as well.

Listen as users
Wonder, Question
a mystery that
for them
could be
clearer.

Listen as users
consider, as
users
offer
ways to
their clarity

Understand through the listening that
Authors experience the
Users’ experience
And revise
the second
according to
author’s
own
choice
for
that
poem’s
life
for
that
poet’s
heart

like a poet’s shadow
that poem leaving
shadows of meaning
inscribed inside
from author
to user,
reveals poet
“my life;”
shadows of meaning
inscribed outside
from poem
to reader
renews poem
“their life;”
End––
Writing Poetry as Workshop.
Writing Poetry as Gifts from the Heart.

Poems for Another Day

Based on Ryan Scala post High Diving Board:
I walked down that ladder as well; memories flooded through me:

Dive

I tremble at
the chipped, bright aqua paint of the diving board
and pool––
blinded by the sun's reflective glare
reminding me to think,
not follow.
Not today, but another day;
Think:
Not ready,
so I climbed
back
down.

  1. I missed the session this morning. Your poem is lovely. Was this one that was workshopped? Then the poetic way you've listed your notes, honoring the process, and caring for the heart of the author. It must have been a rich session.

    1. Thanks for stopping by Margaret. It was a rich session, which is why my notes took a poetic turn -- the presenters' phrases just rang true. I hope you watch the recording here Poetry Workshop 2 This poem was not one workshopped -- the poems in the session are much richer and at once personal as well as universal. Hope to see you in the community. Thanks for your kind words.

  2. Sheri, title of your poem, Sweet Shadows, is two-fold in purpose. Nice job with the poem. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thanks Carol. Yes, the shadows of our past and memories are with us always. So glad I listened to the session today to capture it this way. Thanks again for visiting.
